Supreme?

Posted in Uncategorized by MW on February 7, 2010

Recently, as America now knows, the Supreme Court has ruled that campaign finance has no limits and corporations have the right to freedom of speech(?)…that’s right, corporations are now people too, (contrary to anything intuitive). Last Friday our class discussed campaign finance, and although it is easy to put down the Supreme Court ruling, it is beyond difficult to figure out where to go from here. Personally, I do not agree that corporations are people, (people are people), and should not be able to use the first amendment to defend the use of funds to support a candidate. Individuals should be the ones to give of their own money. I collected some responses to a NY Times article about the ruling:

Dave : Tucson
“Maybe the candidates should wear jumpsuits, like the NASCAR drivers, with the logos of all their corporate sponsons emblazoned on them. That way we can vote for the candidate that is sponsored by our favorite corporations”
Andrew: Texas

“Corporations do not equal people and are not covered by free speech. I suppose it’s time to amend the Gettysburg Address to “that government of the corporations, by the corporations, for the corporations, shall not perish from the earth.”

Agreed.
